I love the land. Realizing my affinity for sunrises in the late summer, the smell of soil and the sight of all the grassland colors made me turn to plein air painting.
Among all the books that I have loved, Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa struck a nerve when she wrote these words: “[ The land ] …will teach it to you: that God and the Devil are one…the majesty coeternal…not 2, but one uncreated…[the natives]….. man will teach you that they are two.”
My paintings should touch what you know when you love the land. You know you have to resign to its being bigger than you are and it’s beauty lies in it not being conquerable.
The land is, at once, mean and beautiful.
